About the coffee

In the cup:
We taste a juicy Ethiopian profile of peach tea with a lime-like acidity and classic Ethiopian florals with a honey-sweet finish.

About the manufacturer:
The story of washing station owner Tariku Kare is one of success when hard work and perseverance meet opportunity. Tariku was born in Bombe and started working as a cherry sorter for a local cooperative at the age of 15. He worked his way up – first getting a promotion and being allowed to wash coffee in the canals, and then when a man from Awassa opened a washing station in Nansebo, he was put in charge. Market disruptions bankrupted the owner, so Tariku and 17 other washing station workers formed a company and opened a new washing facility – which Tariku managed. Later, he opened a new washing station himself – this time in Arsi – to supply coffee to the international market. When the mill in Nansebo was stable and enough producers were supplying cherries, he returned to his hometown of Bombe and built a washing station there. At its locations, Tariku pays a premium for ripe red cherries above the local price and does everything it can to encourage farmers to deliver cherries to its washing stations every year.

Variety:
The Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC), one of Ethiopia's agricultural research centers, approved the release of 74158 in 1979. The variety originated from the Metu Bishari selection, which originated from mother plants in the Metu Woreda (district) of the Illuababora Zone. 74158 was selected and propagated for its high yield potential and resistance to coffee cherry disease.
