About the coffee

In the cup:
We get a sweet profile for this Geisha, reminiscent of apricot, melon, pineapple, and a bright, balanced citric acidity like nectarine with a long, sweet finish. This coffee has delicate floral notes and a silky body.

About the manufacturer:
Finca el Paraíso is located at an altitude of 1700 meters (5,600 feet) in the south of Huila. Jose was a traditional coffee farmer (commodity farmer) until 2012, when he became fascinated by the complexity of specialty coffee and coffee varieties. This led Jose to the decision to transform his farm by planting different varieties and learning how to process them. It took many years to transform the farm, but now he enjoys the hard work and his newfound passion for coffee. El Paraíso is 8 hectares (20 acres) and has grown Sidra, Geisha, Pink Bourbon, Bourbon Ají, and more.

Variety:
This variety was originally collected in the 1930s from coffee forests in Ethiopia. From there, it was sent to the Lyamungu Research Station in Tanzania. In 1953, it was brought to the Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) in Central America, where it was registered as accession number T2722. In the 1960s, it was spread throughout Panama through CATIE after its resistance to coffee rust was recognized. However, the plant's branches were brittle and unpopular with farmers, so it was not widely cultivated. The coffee gained notoriety in 2005 when the Peterson family of Boquete, Panama, submitted it to the "Best of Panama" competition and auction. It received exceptionally high ratings and broke the then-record for green coffee auction prices, selling for over $20 per pound. There is considerable confusion about Geisha, as there are several genetically distinct plant species referred to as Geisha, many of which share a similar geographical origin in Ethiopia. Recent analyses of genetic diversity conducted by World Coffee Research confirm that the Panamanian Geisha, descended from T2722, is distinctive and uniform. It is associated with extremely high cup quality when the plants are well cared for at high altitudes and is known for its delicate floral, jasmine, and peach aromas.
