About the coffee

The Ninga Wash Station is a newer site built by the Long Miles team in 2020. Here, smallholder farmers from Ninga Hill supply between 1800-2000 MASL of cherries that contribute to this batch. It is a very well-crafted coffee that tastes as clean to us as a washed coffee. We find a sweet and delicate cup with a lively acidity. Aromas of citrus and apricot are at the forefront, along with sweet marzipan, milky black tea and dried currants.

Ninga Hill is one of Burundi's most remote regions, characterized by small-scale farming with an average farm size of just 300 square meters and approximately 110 coffee trees per farm. This exceptional coffee is sourced through the Long Miles Coffee Project, an initiative founded in 2011 by Ben and Kristy Carlson. Their goal is to provide agricultural support to coffee farmers in Burundi while also providing roasters with access to high-quality, traceable local coffee.

The cherries are hand picked at maximum ripeness, flooded and hand sorted to remove defects. The cherries are pressed and fermented in closed tanks for 36-48 hours. The pits are then dried on raised beds to a moisture content of 10.5%.

About the roastery

ilse was founded in 2019 with the goal of showcasing the best coffees in the world and opening people's eyes to what coffee can be. Quality coffee is what originally brought us to specialty coffee, but the people we've met along the way are what keeps us here and, more importantly, inspires and motivates us to grow.
